Ganesh chaturthi is on August 29th 2014. Ganesh festival is celebrated with lots of happiness prosperity and joy. Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival dedicated to lord Ganesh. Ganesh is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvathi. Ganesh is the creation of Godess Parvati. The story behind the creation or birth of ganesh is, Parvathi created lord ganesh and gave him the command to watch out the door till she comes back from the bath. Mean while Lord Shiva came and asked Ganesh to leave him inside the doors. But Ganesh disagreed and Shiv got angry and killed Ganesha. Then Parvathi came outside and saw her child dead. So she pleaded to get him back alive. So,Shiva grafted a elephant head on the dead body and gave him life again. Trying to repair his big mistake, he recognized Ganesh as his son and empowered him on all his servants; so he became "Ganapati".

In another Purâna, the Varâha-Purâna, Ganesh is depicted like a wonderfully handsome young man originating from the glittering forehead of Shiva absorbed in a deep meditation. This mânasika putra, son-born-from the Shiva's mind, was a dazzling human boy. Pârvatî was disappointed that the boy was born without her intervention. So, she wished that his head became the head of an elephant. However, when she saw the elephant-headed child, she loved him immediately, and declared that any human or divine undertaking, should not be successful unless Ganesh/Ganapati, Lord of the Gana, would be worshipped first.

The story is told that the elephant-headed Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya, the god of war, were once locked in a dispute. To break the impasse they sought the counsel of their parents, the great God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva proposed that the boys compete in a race of 3 laps around the universe. Kartikeya mounted his peacock and dashed out of sight, hoping to open up an early lead. Ganesha, on the other hand, was in no hurry. He walked over to Shiva and Parvati, went around them thrice and bowed, saying, "You, my dear parents, are the manifest universe. I have completed the race."
